$9.50 Bento Box Special
$7.50 Donburi Bowl
The New Shima is located on Murray St, near the Pavarotti-friendly and remarkably Japanese themed strip of Shafto Lane (Taka's Kitchen & Nippon Fare). The New Shima has been in Perth for a long time, with super fresh sashimi and meat fresh off the Teppanyaki grill being offered. It was with great excitement that we headed off to take advantage of their recently Pavarotti-priced $9.50 bento box special that was advertised on the window.
It seems that The New Shima is indeed "New" (again), with the restaurant having received a facelift along with a possible change in management and a drastic culling of the menu. Gone are the delicious beef variations cooked on the Teppanyaki Plate. The choices now being the deep fried options of Chicken/Fish Katsu and Chicken Karaage. It's worth mentioning the Chicken Teriyaki is still cooked on the Teppanyaki Plate. There is also a small assortment of sushi and gyoza available as well.
There was another super special bento box ($9.50) on offer when we went. It featured a choice of any of the hot dishes above served with salad, rice, pickes, sushi, miso soup with a choice of a can of coke or a coupla gyoza on the side. We settled for the super special bento box complete with gyoza ($9.50) and a Chicken Katsu Donburi ($7.50).
The food appears to be freshly cooked to order and the sides you get with the bento box are great. However, the quality of the hot food served up was average, the deep fried delights (including the Gyoza) could have been crispier and packed with more of a flavour hit. Whilst the rice had a trace of teriyaki sauce through it, the lack of an accompanying condiment for the Karaage, be it Japanese style mayo or even chilli or BBQ sauce, further compounded the lack of flavour.
The New Shima appears to have changed hands and is no longer as good as the old New Shima. With the superior Japanese options available on Shafto Lane and throughout town, we probably won't be back.
