Situated on the east end of CBD, Cafe Karache is located across Murray Street from our favourite ramen shop in Perth, Nao Japanese . Due to how much we love Ramen here at The Pavarotti, we don't seem to eat at Karache as often as we should. That said, when we have resisted temptation, we've always enjoyed the selection of food available at Cafe Karache greatly.
Cafe Karache offers up a wide selection of Malaysian Food. A lot of it is served from the bain marie but there are also some daily specials and cooked to order dishes available. It's worth pointing out that this is not the typical bain marie fare you would have come across before. The selection of dishes is fantastic and they are all very tasty. The bain marie is the home of two of our favourite offerings Nasi Campur and Nasi Briyani.
Nasi Campur, or in English: mixed rice, is commonly available throughout South East Asia. Nasi Campur stalls and restaurants serve a large assortment of meat and vegetable dishes, with some of them having up to 100 different dishes on offer. At Karache there are usually about 10 different selections available. We couldn't go past the Beef Rendang, Lamb Curry and Chicken Curry.
Nasi Briyani is another Malaysian rice dish, the rice gets its distinct coloration by cooking the rice with saffron and/or turmeric. The rice is cooked with a combination of onions, garlic, ginger and various spices depending on where it is from. Karache cooks up a pretty good and authentic Briyani. They use a nice long grain basmati rice which was extremely tasty and fluffy, it's all too common to get stodgy Briyani in Perth. The rice was also was flavoured well and the peanuts were a welcome addition. The beef was very tender and extremely tasty, it fell apart very easily and there was no gristle to be found. The Prawn Fritter probably wasn't necessary but it was okay, it contained some nice juicy prawns, but the batter was a bit stodgy. The pickled cucumber and red onion were a nice little addition to the dish, adding an extra dimension to the Briyani.
If you don't have the time to wait at Nao or are after some good, cheap and tasty Malaysian Food, Cafe Karache is the place to go. The service is fantastic and the staff are extremely friendly and nice.
