$10 Lunch Formula - Baguette / tartine sandwich and a drink.
It's hard to believe that Jean Pierre Sancho has been open in Perth for over three years now. They have quickly expanded, operating out of three locations, two within the Perth CBD and one across the horseshoe bridge in Northbridge. The bakery supplies bread to Neil Perry's Rockpool and has won numerous awards, including being voted as Australia's Favourite Bakery in 2012, on the Lifestyle Food Channel's "I Love Food Awards".
With all this in mind, we set off to see what the Boulangerie and Patisserie would tempt us with today. On our way to JPS it took all the will power we possessed to walk past the Crispy Pork Banh Mi on offer at City Provs (review here). One lunch formula was ordered with a toasted beef, mustard & cheese tartine sandwich. We attempted to order a second with a ham, brie and salad baguette, but were politely informed it would be $11. No thanks - we'll just take the baguette ($9.25).
Perhaps it was the bad taste left in our mouth by the 'deception' that had occurred with the second lunch formula. Or maybe it was the lofty standards we had set for this award winning establishment. Either way, we left JPS unsatisfied and even wishing we had weaker constitution or Doc Brown and the Delorean to take us back in time to get a Banh Mi from City Provs.
Don't get me wrong, there were still highlights. The brie, in particular, was creamy and delicious and the rye in the tartine was also great but overall there was something missing. Maybe it was poor sandwich selection, but there was a bit of 'I could have just brought this from home' regret after the meal. While it won't be high on the lunch rotation, we will be back to sample the Croque-Monsieur ($6.90) and the wonderful assortment of pastries on offer.
