Is there anything worse than a disappointing lunch? You know the feeling. That particular brand of food envy that sinks in when you realise you have squandered your precious lunch hour on a speculative meal that promised so much and failed to deliver. Sadly, we recently had this exact experience at The Pavarotti as we continued 160 Central Week.
Let me start by saying that Yummi Mummi is not a bad place to eat. This review is in no way designed to dissuade you from eating there entirely. But whatever you do, for the love of God, don't get the steak roll.
The ethos at Yummi Mummi is one that we completely endorse. They state that their packed lunches (a set price for any lunch, drink and snack combo) are developed to satisfy the inner city worker who wants "quality, quantity and variety without having to spend a fortune each day". Sounds great, right? They feature a range of rolls, wraps and sandwiches that all looked appetising. In fact, their packed lunch combos only cost $10 and, in hindsight, would have been perfect for a review. But we couldn't go past the steak roll special: grilled steak with lettuce, tomato, cucumber and onion served in Turkish bread with a sauce.
Let's talk about the positives. The Turkish bread was fine (although would have been better toasted), the serving was generous and the salads were fresh and tasty. The steak, although overdone, was also well seasoned. In fact, it was very close to being a good steak roll, which is what makes this so much worse. Enough beating around the bush - the sauce was horrible! I think it was made by caramelising some onions and bombing them with pepper and cream. It just didn't work. The resulting thick, brownish sauce was way too heavy and looked like it was made primarily of cholesterol. Unfortunately, it ruined the roll and left us feeling a bit 'uerghk'!
As mentioned earlier, Yummi Mummi still has a lot to offer. Their range of rolls and sandwiches looked great and, although we haven't sampled a packed lunch combo, it sounds right up our alley. If they replaced that creamy sauce with some cheese and relish, cooked the steak a bit less and toasted the bread, this steak roll would also be a winner. But for now, the steak roll is something to avoid. Have a fresh roll instead.
