$9.50 Hainanese Chicken Rice
For a long time Newton Circle has been our undisputed favourite Hainanese Chicken Rice spot in the CBD. However, there is a new challenger to the title. Enter Mi Shanghai in the Enex 100 food court. Having previously fallen for the terrible, and horribly over priced dim sum at Mi Shanghai we really had to talk ourselves into ordering the Hainanese Chicken Rice. Secretly we may have been hoping it was going to be terrible so we could unleash something similar to Rob Broadfield's Matisse review from the weekend, but then nobody likes having a bad meal.
A small printed sign on top of the bain marie caught our attention whilst contemplating what to order. The rice was aromatic and fluffy, with good amounts of garlic and ginger. Exactly what you expect from a good chicken rice, in fact it was some of the tastiest we've had in Perth (besides a certain Pavarotti writer's Mum's Chicken Rice) . You could tell the broth had been used to poach the chicken, it was absolutely delicious and tasted a lot more natural than some chicken rice broths. The chicken itself was tender, it was a bit tough but there was a nice hint of sesame oil mixed in with the soy sauce mixture. The chilli was the crowning jewel of the dish, extremely flavoursome and with just the right amount of heat, acidity and tartness.
It's times like this that we really really enjoy what we do at the Pavarotti, finding great food from the most unlikely places. While we would definitely advise that you avoid their bain marie and dim sum, we can't emphasise how much we enjoyed their Hainanese Chicken Rice. Was this a one time abnormality? We will have to go back and check and we can't wait to either! Watch out Newton Circle... there may be a new Hainanese Chicken Rice King in the CBD.
UPDATE #1 - We've been back and have to say the chicken was a bit disappointing... a bit bland and there was a fair bit of bone. The rice, soup and chilli were still good though
